Michael was born in Gateshead in 1961 and educated at Heathfield Senior High School and Gateshead College. He is also a graduate of the University of Oxford (Wadham College). Michael began his career with his family firm of insurance brokers on Tyneside. He served as Member of Parliament for the Langbaurgh parliamentary constituency (now Middlesbrough South and East Cleveland) from 1992 to 1997. Between 1994 and 1997 he held a number of ministerial posts including Government Whip, Sponsor Minister for the North East of England and HM Paymaster General.
Between 1998 and 2005 he was Director of Research & Consultancy for Oxford Analytica a firm with close ties to the University of Oxford which provided analysis of global economic, business and political trends.
He was appointed as a Member of the House of Lords in May 2008. He served as Deputy Chairman of the Conservative Party from 2006—2010 and held a number of shadow ministerial roles between 2008—2010 including: Energy & Climate Change, Cabinet Office and Children, Schools and Families.
Michael is Managing Director of Walton Bates Associates a management consultancy based in the City of Durham specialising in corporate governance. He serves as non-executive director of a number of companies. He is also a member of the Business Advisory Forum of the Said Business School of the University of Oxford. He is a patron of employment charity Tomorrow's People (North East) and president of the Cleveland Ironstone Mining Museum.
Michael’s interests are education, enterprise and the North East of England.

Peter Crome has worked in the Hospitality Industry for over four decades.
In the past thirty years he has worked in the Luxury Market. He joined The Hyde Park Hotel (now Mandarin- Hyde Park) in 1979, working with legendary hotelier Willy Bauer. When Bauer moved to The Savoy as Managing Director, Crome followed as Hotel Manager and soon made a name for himself within the Industry.
In 1990 American hotelier, Bob Zimmer offered Peter the post of General Manager of the refurbished St Andrew’s Old Course Hotel in the ‘Home of Golf’. There he saw the Hotel through to its 5 Star rating.
In 1994 peter moved to The Chewton Glen Hotel and Spa in Hampshire as Managing Director, taking the reins from Robin Hutson who went on to found the Hotel du Vin Group. Here Crome made his mark and was recognised as Hotelier of the Year in 2000. He was also voted one of the top three Hotel General Managers in the World’ in a readers poll in Gallivanter’s Guide.
In 2003 Crome was appointed Chairman and Managing Director of the famed Carnegie Club at Skibo Castle by the then, new owner. There he oversaw a £16m plus refurbishment programme.

Nathan Hones is an architect and the General Manager of Stride Treglown – Abu Dhabi. Originally from Sydney, he graduated in Architecture from Sydney University in 1996 and has recently completed his MBA in Construction & Real Estate at Reading University.

Jerome Munro-Lafon is a Managing Director at URS/Scott Wilson, with specific responsibility for all UK & Ireland operations.
After graduating from Glasgow University in 1975, Jerome joined the Motorways Division of Strathclyde Regional Council where he gained a wide range of experience progressing the M8 urban motorway programme in Glasgow.
In 1977, he transferred to Scott Wilson to assist with several World Bank funded road projects in French speaking West Africa. This was closely followed with a four year period in Baghdad working on the Baghdad Transport Study and the Baghdad Metro Project.
In 1985, after a short period back in the UK, he was sent to Saudi Arabia as Project Manager for a High Capacity Rail Study to serve the major conurbations across the Kingdom.
On returning to the UK in 1987 he was appointed head of Transport Planning and started to develop a cross discipline group within Scott Wilson to provide a comprehensive range of services to the evolving PFI market. In 1995, he joined the Europe Board of Scott Wilson to drive expansion of the business into Poland and Eastern Europe. His experience of working with banks and his understanding of both the public and private sectors were key to advancing the Scott Wilson business. Although routed in transport, Jerome was instrumental in broadening the Scott Wilson organisation into the wider built environment, taking responsibility for master-planning, ports, airports and transport planning.
In 2004, he was made responsible for all the Scott Wilson operations in the South of England. Graham has been involved with CIC since 1989. Initially, as a member of the Council and its Executive Board, then as a Director. He was appointed Chief Executive and Secretary in October 1991.
Graham is responsible for the general policy and direction of the Council, for maintaining effective communication with Government, other external agencies and with members and for establishing and maintaining the CIC Secretariat.
He is also currently the Secretary of the Strategic Forum for Construction Olympic Task Force, which is hosted by CIC, and a Board member of both ConstructionSkills and Constructing Excellence. Additionally he is a Visiting Professor at the University of Northumbria. He is an Honorary Fellow of the RIBA, CIBSE, the ABE and the Faculty of Building and an Honorary Member of the RICS and CIAT. He was awarded the President’s Medal of the CIOB in 2000 and the Peter Stone Award in 1996.
Prior to joining CIC, Graham was Chief Executive of the British Institute of Architectural Technologists (a member of CIC) from 1983.
Graham has had a lifelong involvement in the sport of fencing and his competitive career culminated with a Commonwealth Medal in 1990. In 1992, he captained the British Sabre team at the Barcelona Olympic Games. He is currently the Manager and Performance Director of the British Olympic Fencing Team and was the Team Leader at the 2004 Olympics Games.

Peter Bolton King started work in 1973 with a leading Warwickshire firm of chartered surveyors and estate agents, Locke & England. After working in different departments he qualified as a Chartered Surveyor and became the firm’s youngest ever partner. In 1987 the business was sold to Lloyds Bank and Peter Bolton King became an area director. More recently, the firm became part of Bradford and Bingley and he became area sales director for the largest area in the country. In July 2003, Peter became Chief Executive of the National Association of Estate Agents, the largest professional body for estate agents with a membership in excess of 10,000.
Earlier this year he was appointed Group Chief Executive of the National Federation of Property Professionals when a new company was set up which now incorporates the National Association of Estate Agents (NAEA), the Association of Residential Letting Agents (ARLA), National Association of Valuers and Auctioneers (NAVA) and the Federation of Overseas Property Developers Agents and Consultants (FOPDAC).
Peter was awarded an honorary Certificate in International Property by the National Association of Realtors in recognition of his contribution to international agency.
Currently representing the NAEA on various Government committees relating to the proposed Home Information Packs and related matters, he also holds a number of other Industry Board appointments of behalf of the Federation.
